The Special Gift of Milk-The children need your help!!

Many children in Guatemala do not grow up using milk. Seeing children with bowed legs from poor calcium intake (found in milk) is not uncommon. Milk and formula are so expensive that many mothers will give their babies bottles of coffee and sugar, causing the children to lack proper nutrition. Government statistics estimate that 50% of children in Guatemala are undernourished. Regular addition of milk into a diet goes a long way towards alleviating this poor nutrition.

A 50 lb bag of powdered milk (which most homes would need to purchase because they can't afford regular milk and don't have adequate refrigeration facilities), costs about $150, which is too much for most homes to pay. So often, children go without, even those in well run orphanages.

Over the past three years ORI received a special grant to purchase milk for the homes. The milk these monies purchased runs out the middle of this year. An organization in the USA has offered a matching grant of $45,000 towards the purchase of more milk. That is where you come in. Please consider donating specifically towards matching this grant. If an additional $45,000 is raised, we will be able to purchase enough powdered, enriched milk to distribute to the children here for the next year.
